International component manufacturer Wurth recently hosted their global conference and incentive trip in Cape Town, South Africa. Approximately 1500 Wurth employees took part in a 5 day program, which included trips to the wine lands, a sunrise breakfast on Signal Hill, a disco with the colourful Cape Minstrels, a trip up Table Mountain and an African feast overlooking Camps Bay.
One of the highlights of the event was an adventure rally organized by Green Route. The rally took participants into three informal settlements around Cape Town. This allowed delegates to interact with the local community and support local initiatives. At each workshop delegates completed tasks and collected tokens valued at 10 Euros, which were donated to a local school.
The first stop was Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay. Delegates received haircuts from local barbers, attended a mosaic workshop held by MP Mosaics; and created their own greeting cards at the innovative T-bag designs company.
At each project delegates had the opportunity to shop, which contributed significantly to the sustainability of these projects. On the days the group visited T-bag Designs and MP Mosaics, sales almost doubled, which created valuable income for the local crafters.
At Masiphumelele in Kommetjie, Green Route arranged a bicycle tour through the township, with bicycles supplied by the Bicycle Empowerment Network (BEN).
BEN is a local project which facilitates the training of previously disadvantaged persons in the art of bicycle maintenance. The bicycles have been donated by various EU charities, and after they have been restored, the employees are able to sell the bicycles creating a means of income.
The tour continued past a spaza shop (local corner shop) where delegates purchased blankets, which they donated to a local crèche.
At Ocean View, a local fishing village near Cape Point, guests purchased spices to make pickled fish, then headed to various outlets bargaining for ingredients to make a delicious traditional fish dish.
In total the Wurth group donated 15 000 Euros to the Chris Hani Independent School in Langa
