South Africa reigned supreme at the first World Travel Awards Africa Ceremony, held in partnership with the International Convention Centre in Durban on 12 May 2008. Reigning King of the Zulu nation, His Majesty King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu opened the ceremony, which was watched by approximately 400 VIP's and leading figures. South Africa won a range of the most coveted awards.
The winners included:

• International Convention Centre, Durban (Africa's Leading Conference Centre)
• Mount Nelson Hotel & Spa (Africa's Leading Hotel)
• OR Tambo International Airport (Africa's Leading Airport)
• Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve (Africa's Leading Safari Lodge)
• Shamwari Game Reserve (Africa's Leading Safari)
• South African Airways (Africa's Leading Airline)
• Sun City Resort (Africa's Leading Resort)
• Sun International ( Africa's Leading Hotel Brand)
• Thanda Private Game Reserve (Africa's Leading Luxury Lodge)
• The Arabella Western Cape Hotel & Spa (Africa’s Leading Family Resort Award)
Graham Cooke, President and Founder of the World Travel Awards said, “It was a wonderful evening for African tourism and hopefully an inspiration for all those nominated but also those who were unlucky enough not to win". The winners were chosen by votes from executives working within travel and tourism.
