  – The Inaugural Green Tribe Project Is Unveiled

Being committed to working in Africa, Green Route accepts the responsibilities we have to the individuals, societies, environments and economies of the countries in which we operate. The Green Tribe initiative was established to help us manage these responsibilities, promoting sustainable tourism whilst supporting sustainable community development.

Community DevelopmentAs part of this initiative, Green Route is excited to announce that we have selected the Cape Town-based “Ikhaya le themba” as our first official Green Tribe community development project.

This small NGO, originally initiated by the Vineyard Church, offers holistic care for children affected by HIV/Aids in the township of Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay. The Xhosa phrase “iKhaya le themba” means “home of hope”, which reflects their vision for a world where every child has a hope and a future.

The project, which found its feet in 2005, offers after-school activities and community outreach programmes for approximately 60 primary school children, who are often alone while their parents or carers work. Operating from their donated container and garden on leased land or from the local community centre, IKhaya le themba currently offers three educational programmes based on reading and spelling, art therapy and food gardening.

The aim of the project is to increase hope in the community, to improve the physical, emotional and spiritual health of the children and to promote a positive attitude in the children towards their future.

There are plans in the pipeline to construct classrooms which will be of further benefit to the children. However, there is plenty of scope to assist this little project in many different ways and we look forward to helping them grow. We hope that our clients will be as interested in getting involved as we are.

As part of our commitment to developing the Green Tribe initiative over time, the company hopes to be able to nominate specific Green Tribe projects in each of the key destinations in which we work, which includes Durban, Sun City, Johannesburg, Mpumalanga, Victoria Falls, Mozambique and Nairobi.
