The world class Royal Livingstone Hotel is in sight and sound of the Victoria Falls |
After more than 60 years of quiet decay the charming town of Livingstone at Victoria Falls on the Zambian side has been revitalised in the past decade. The building of the 173-room five star Royal Livingstone Hotel and its sister Zambezi Sun (215 rooms) has been the catalyst of a remarkable revival, especially for global incentive groups who discover the real Africa here near the Zambezi River and the world’s greatest waterfall.
Just after the turn of the century Zambia entered into the international incentive market for the first time like a firecracker! The catalyst to spark this “incentive rush” was the visionary creation and building of The Falls Resort, comprising the colonial-style five star Royal Livingstone Hotel (173 rooms), the adjacent three star Zambezi Sun Hotel (215 rooms), the Convention Centre (up to 340 delegates) and two ethnic-style outdoor boma restaurants to cater for 300 and 80 people.
The Royal Livingstone was Zambia’s first incentive class hotel at a highly desired destination – Wonder of the World, the Victoria Falls. And what a winner! If properties are about location, location, location then this is the supreme Platinum Class! You may sit on the river deck and watch another spectacular African sunset within sight and sound of the Victoria Falls – mesmerising and truly unique! The quality and style are every inch world class and hundreds of blue-chip global companies have experienced its delights.
Even closer to the Falls, and within a few minutes’ walk, is the Zambezi Sun. Built Mediterranean style around a giant feature swimming pool and bar entertainment area. This is billed as three star and so the price is right for big groups, but we assure our clients that this is actually every inch a superior four star property and ideal for cost-effective incentive groups as it can cater for more than 400 people.
Apart from the vast array of soft and adrenalin adventure activities there is also an abundance of history and culture to tap into when visiting Livingstone, Zambia. It was in 1855 that explorer Dr David Livingstone was the first European to set eyes on the phenomenon known locally as “Mosi oa Tunya” – the Smoke that Thunders. A settlement grew up near Victoria Falls and in 1904 the area was named Livingstone after the Scot who first explored the region.
Livingstone Town played a significant role in colonial Africa, serving as the capital of the British Protectorate of Northern Rhodesia from 1911-1935 and several fine examples of colonial architecture from this era still remain in the town. In 1935 Lusaka was named the capital and the once busy city of Livingstone lapsed into decay.
Until now! Because of its proximity to the legendary Zambezi River and to the awesome Falls some world class hotels and safari lodges have emerged in recent years and the tourists are enchanted – Livingstone once more is a thriving town and is being revitalised day by day, thanks to a plethora of international tourists, a friendly and welcoming environment and the advent of Livingstone as an incentive destination to match the best anywhere.
